Remembering Nick

We are deeply saddened to share that Nick, our beloved 18-year-old California sea lion, passed away on the morning of Thursday, August 7, at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute in Washington, D.C., where he had been temporarily housed since 2023 during the construction of our new sea lion habitat.

Nick will be fondly remembered for his impressive size—more than 700 lbs. at his prime—and his even larger personality. He delighted guests at both DZCA and the Smithsonian’s National Zoo with his booming bark and playful spirit, often seen basking in the sun or interacting with his fellow sea lions.

He will be deeply missed by all those who had the pleasure of knowing and caring for him. DZCA and our neighboring communities will never sound the same.
